Culture Night in Groningen

After months of preparation we were finally ready: February 5 was the day: time for the first edition of the Culture Night! A group of cultural orientated student organizations organized this event and performed that evening. CAST and Usva coordinated the organization of this artistic event. During the evening there were several possibilities: having a good meal, watching and participating in debat or workshop, listening to poems or just enjoying some good music and theatre plays.

The evening started at Het Pakhuis where food was prepared for a large number of people. During dinner Mira performed and Flanor presented the poetry club of café Marleen. Everyone had a good time, a great start of the evening! After dinner we went to jazz café De Spieghel, where the first acts were ready to hit the stage. Choir Estrella’s gave us a wonderful show and they brought a lot of fans, so we immediately had a full house. After the performance a workshop followed. Blue Toes taught participants how to dance. This was a big success; people were dancing and they look quite professional already! Then it was time for debating: Kalliope presented a show debat (a debat you can watch as an audience and don’t participate) and a ‘real’ debat, where the crowd could give their opinion too. GUTS performed ‘America Abridged’, a play about the history of America, which was very funny and fun!

The next group preparing to perform was Gica, who performed Hungarian songs. After this it was time for something completely different: Les Gais Galants. This historically focused dance group taught our guests how to dance like they did back in the day: court dancing. The success of the workshop showed us court dancing may be old, but it sure isn’t old fashioned!
A different workshop was the one presented by GST: they taught the cheery crowd all about improvisation. In the mean time Stout ‘n Herring started playing; a band that plays Irish folk songs. People were going wild, dancing and singing along! Stukafest asked Stout ‘n Herring to come, because they are performing during Stukafest’s miniature festival: a group of performances in student rooms. The programme in De Spieghel was ended by Bathroom Scenario, another choir. Then it was time to really let your hair down: an afterparty in nightcafé Warhol.

A wonderful evening! Let’s do this again!
